East Africa
Food insecurity has become an emergent crisis in East Africa and the surrounding areas. Currently 30 million people are living on the brink of starvation due to persistent drought and conflict in the region. While the media in North America has not shed much light on this humanitarian crisis, relief agencies, the World Food Programs, the United Nations system, and other international NGOs have established programs to address the growing needs of residents in the region. The JCDR has decided to join this relief effort and is currently raising money to address this quickly growing humanitarian emergency.
The Coalition’s response has included allocations to:
- Bechol Lashon for the immediate distribution of food for the Abayudaya community in Uganda.
- Drink Local Drink Tap to support the creation of a potable water system in Uganda.
- Rural Initiative for Community Empowerment West Nile (RICE), a local Ugandan NGO, that seeks to empower rural communities. The allocation will be used for an innovative initiative to create a sustainable solution to female dropout rate due to a lack of sanitary pads in Rhino Camp refugee settlement.
- World Jewish Relief, and their local partner RACIDA, to provide drought relief in Mandera, Kenya through cash transfers to those deemed most vulnerable.
