In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011, 26 North American Jewish organizations came together to form the Jewish Coalition for Japan Relief.
The Coalition’s response included:
- Commissioning a bakery with Chabad of Asia to deliver freshly baked bread to over 30,000 victims living in shelters in the Sendai region.
- Providing food and emergency supplies to victims in evacuation centers, and equipping a mobile health clinic through a partnership with the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
- Training nearly 200 frontline workers and staff in psychological first aid in conjunction with the International Medical Corps (IMC).
- Working together with JEN, a leading Japanese NGO, on a pilot program to establish Community Cafés and Rehabilitation Centers for victims living in temporary housing and lacking psychosocial support services. The Café program pilot proved successful and the Coalition subsequently supported its expansion to additional communities to serve hundreds of families.
- Support to deaf and hearing-impaired victims in hard-hit coastal communities in Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima prefectures through a partnership with the Nippon Foundation, a local Japanese NGO. The Coalition supported Nippon in identifying victims, providing social services, and paying home visits to the hearing impaired.
- Through its partnership with Japan’s Direct Relief, the Coalition provided emergency relief services for people with disabilities and the elderly, including help meeting urgent medical needs; offering shelter; and bringing food, water, and fuel in the aftermath of the crisis.
